I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills from whence cometh my help. Psalms 121:1
About Us
Sunny Slopes - A Place To Return To
Nestled against the Northeast face of Purgatory Mountain and lying just south of Richland Creek, Sunny Slopes is a part of history, a part of the Uwharrie Mountain Chain believed by some to be the oldest mountains in the world and about which someone has said “the Uwharries aren’t mighty, but they are beautiful”.
The area around Purgatory Mountain is a place with a rich historical background reminiscent of the 19th century when, farming, hunting, gold mining, digging roots, and yes, even moon shining were a part of the culture. With this in mind our purpose has been and continues to be the re-creation and preservation of this remarkable rural heritage.
The days of yesteryear when folks worked the land and the land reluctantly gave back– it was a time of planting and harvesting–a time when on cool nights and a full-moon, one could hear the sounds of hounds with their beautiful mellow voices echoing over the hills as they chased that elusive and wily fox. Old-timers sat by firelight listening to the dogs baying while retelling the stories that their fathers had told them.
The generations of folks who settled the area around the mountain were strong and rugged people, a people of faith. A people who weathered both good and bad times with a persistent resilience that could only be matched by the mountain itself. They mastered a lifestyle with none of the conveniences that we take for granted. Cabins and fireplaces, heat and cold, drought and flood– what a story! A story that needs to be retold!
Sunny Slopes consists of approximately 220 acres of pastures, streams, and woodlands. It is our hope that your visit with us will enable you to see beautiful land features and possibly native wildlife as well as domesticated animals in natural settings.
Additionally, we hope that you can be part of an outdoor classroom– an educational setting without walls where children and adults can learn about our rural heritage, our history, land forms and scenic attractions. In a word, a place where each visitor, whether child or adult will receive a better understanding of a more natural world and its contribution to present day culture.
Visit us and see for yourself! A great outdoor adventure!
